ABOUT

Drawing on her expertise in textiles and 15 years of experience working with private and commercial clients, Maeve dedicates herself to sensualizing built environments.

Maeve is an artist and designer who creates large-scale soft sculptures and fiber art installations. From Brooklyn, New York, Maeve studied Exhibition Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology where she explored materiality, scale and its links to human proportion. She established her studio in 2009, and over the course of her career enjoyed creating site-specific works for private clients, public spaces and businesses throughout the United States and abroad.

By connecting pliable fibers through ancient and modern textile art techniques, forms emerge which embody softness and strength. Typically working on an ambitious scale, Maeve creates pieces that engage with the space and the audience, encouraging viewers to not only observe the work visually but also interact with it tactilely and physically. People are invited to explore by walking around and sometimes through the pieces. Maeves aim is to sensualize the built environment through her haptic designs that embrace mind and body.

Maeve works predominantly with natural fibers, occasionally incorporating wood, metal and stoneware to create sculptures, wall hangings, installations and room dividers. The knotwork is inspired by pairing age-old techniques with modernized materials, as well as various reference points such as string figures, nautical knot craft, the work of Magdelena Abakanowicz and values of the environmental art movement. With her hands as tools, she manipulates humble materials to explore the infinite possibilities of fiber as a major sculptural medium.
